Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System

A purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without the burdens of going through a financial institution. Digital signatures provide part of the solution, but the main benefits are lost if a trusted third party is still required to prevent double-spending.

Bitcoin: A Total Turing Machine

We demonstrate that the Bitcoin Script language allows not only for primitive recursion, but in the deployment of an Ackerman function and hence the ability to simply recurse in Bitcoin script, we show that the script system is Turing complete.

Bitcoin: SEIR-C Propagation Models of Block and Transaction Dissemination

Bitcoin can be modelled using the mathematics of biological systems. SEIR and SEIR-C models capture the propagation of transactions and blocks within the bitcoin network. With systems reacting as a susceptible or immune carrier, we can model the forces driving cycles of recurrent states.

Bitcoin: The Most Law-Abiding System Ever Created.

It has been frequently argued that bitcoin is a “censorship resistant” immutable ledger that precludes law enforcement or government from acting against illicit actors in the system and precludes the freezing or seizing of assets. However, in this paper, it will be demonstrated that contrary to popular mythology, bitcoin can be easily frozen and seized under proceeds of crime legislation or even under the civil forfeiture rules.

Blake and Milton Reactionary and Revolutionary

In their own rather different political contexts, Milton and Blake each adopted republican and revolutionary positions. In taking a stance on religion each has integrated their own ideas on the nature of republican government while simultaneously being bound by the fetters and constraints of the time. Both Paradise Lost by Milton and Milton combined with The Marriage of Heaven and Hell by Blake form a concept of freedom that is constrained by the conceptual ideas of the authors while equally extending knowledge of freedom and society.

Building a Unix/Linux Incident response / Forensic Disk
Digital Forensics

There are many Linux distributions readily available. This however should not stop you creating your own version of a UNIX forensic tools disc. Whether you are on Solaris, HP-UX or any other variety of UNIX it is simple to create a forensic tools CD that can go between systems.

Choosing Your Turtle

The question of whether scientific theories give us the literal truth, or are they merely useful instruments for making predictions remains unanswered and is likely never to be adequately described. Between problems of language and the fundamental differences in scientific theory, discovering a fundamental external truth may be little more than finding a series of better equations that replace one after the next in a series of turtles all the way down.

Code in a Flash

Recently I have been involved with the analysis of a number of rogue web sites linked to a fast flux network. Tracking websites is hard enough, but the process to analyse the flash code and other scripts has been a head-ache in the past. There are a number of tools that can be used (mostly commercial, though there are some on the OWASP site that are open). The issue being that few of these help to filter the content of the code.

Code Skills Make Better Forensic Analysts
Digital Forensics

I know I am pushing something up a hill here in suggesting this, but .Net coding in a Windows environment and general coding skills for Linux should be a goal for all Forensic Analysts to learn.

Communism, Envy, and the Desire to Promote Toxic Equality

There are many false ideas about the idea of capitalism. Capitalism is a system that operates in the material self-interest of all individuals in society, including non-capitalists. In any meritocracy, those who believe that they should be better and who should achieve more will remain envious of those who through luck and good fortune and hard work achieve what others cannot; and this is the real heart of both socialism and communism; a system that allows the jealous and the envious to piously act as they plot against the good fortune of others.
