Investigate dissonance, defensive stories and missing evidence
Study self-honesty as the information quality on which the book’s other practices depend. Learn to distinguish facts, interpretations and protective narratives, run a precise private review, and convert a bounded record into proportionate correction without self-abuse, forced disclosure or denial of genuine constraints.
Allow about 100 minutes for reading, learning and immediate practice. Multi-day exercises run alongside later lessons.
Learning objectives
Reconstruct the philosophical argument for an integrated account of conduct.
Identify denial, rationalisation, minimisation, selective memory and confessional performance in cases.
Apply four after-action questions while preserving evidence, uncertainty and power constraints.

Assigned source readings
The book text is the source. The lesson, invented cases and practice tasks are accompanying teaching material. Page numbers below refer to the downloadable full-book PDF, whose pagination can differ from the manuscript’s printed contents.

Develop the argument
The lesson
An integrated account is relevant, not indiscriminate
The philosophical section draws on Aristotelian truthfulness, Rand’s critique of evasion and Peterson’s concern with contradictory narratives. Its central proposal is that an integrated self keeps an account that does not change merely to protect an image. Relevance can change across audiences without facts changing. A colleague needs accurate project information; they do not thereby need private relationship details. The source explicitly distinguishes adapting a story for context from editing it for self-flattery. Privacy and honest self-assessment can coexist.
Treat the stronger psychological language cautiously. The text links repeated evasion to anxiety, confusion and a fractured sense of self, but the assigned chapter does not establish that these experiences are always caused by dishonesty. Notes 220–225 invoke different philosophical and psychological works, including a conference presentation on honesty and health. A reference list is not a verified causal chain. The course can examine the plausible administrative burden of maintaining incompatible stories while refusing to infer that a distressed person must be deceiving themselves.
Name mechanisms without reading minds
Cognitive dissonance describes tension between a valued self-image and conflicting conduct. The author contrasts changing behaviour with changing the story to protect that image. Motivated reasoning searches selectively for support; denial rejects a problem, rationalisation supplies a protective explanation and minimisation shrinks its apparent significance. These concepts help ask questions about evidence. They should not become labels used to dismiss every explanation a person offers. An inconvenient fact may also show that the original standard was unrealistic, that the account is incomplete or that a genuine external constraint mattered.
The diagnostic section adds selective recall, compressed timelines, lowered comparison standards and confessional theatre. A person may remember one successful fortnight while forgetting repeated abandoned attempts, or compare themselves only with someone doing worse. A dramatic admission may attract attention without producing repair. Test these possibilities through dated records and observable follow-through. Conversely, a person seeking support may need time before action becomes possible; disclosure is not automatically performance. The relevant difference is whether an account helps understand and address the problem, not how emotionally expressive or publicly visible it is.
Use the after-action structure to make truth actionable
The military After Action Review example asks what was intended, what happened, why there was a difference and what should change next time. This is a useful procedural analogy for the ledger. Start with a specific standard, establish the record and then examine causes. The source claims that the military protocol suspends rank and removes the social cost of honesty. Do not treat those institutional claims as independently verified guarantees. In any real organisation, retaliation risk, authority and facilitation affect whether people can safely speak. A procedure’s stated purpose does not prove that every implementation achieves it.
The cultural critique warns against affirmations that erase mistakes and explanations that dissolve agency. Preserve its own qualification: compassionate self-talk can be necessary, and social conditions can genuinely constrain choice. A disciplined review asks both what was outside the person’s control and what could be changed within it. Keep a separate evidence column, allow competing explanations and specify what would distinguish them. Then select one proportionate revision. This makes responsibility concrete without treating every painful feeling as a confession or every constraint as an excuse. The quality of the review is measured by accuracy and better decisions, not by the severity of its verdict.
Worked example · invented for this course
Original course example: The recurring late handoff
In this invented case, a volunteer translation team misses three handoff dates. The coordinator blames unreliable contributors, while records show late source files on two dates and an uncommunicated scope increase on the third.
State the intended handoff dates and exact scope at the time each promise was made.
Reconstruct actual file arrivals and scope changes before assigning motives.
Separate the contributor delays from the coordinator’s failure to renegotiate the expanded task.
Test rival explanations: unclear ownership, inadequate buffer and avoidant communication may each explain part of the pattern.
Revise the handoff rule so scope changes trigger a new date discussion and missing inputs are flagged promptly.
What follows: The review locates shared causes and a specific controllable correction. It neither absolves everyone through complexity nor forces all blame onto one person.
Train the skill
Practice and evidence
1. Trace a protective narrative
Write a fictional case containing denial, rationalisation and minimisation of the same missed commitment. Add records that support one explanation and challenge another.
Deliverable: A 400-word case and evidence-based diagnosis.
Distinguish what was observed from inferred motive.
Include at least one genuine constraint.
Identify what further information would resolve an uncertainty.
Review criteria
Total available: 10 points
Concepts 4 points
Uses all three mechanisms distinctly and accurately.
Evidence 4 points
Tests explanations rather than asserting hidden motives.
Balance 2 points
Preserves a real constraint and a controllable responsibility.
2. Conduct an after-action review
Review a fictional group project using the four source questions. Include a power difference and a method for recording disagreement safely.
Deliverable: A one-page review with intended/actual evidence, competing causes and one tested revision.
Set the original standard before judging outcomes.
Allow correction of the record by participants.
Separate private reflection from information appropriate to share.
Review criteria
Total available: 10 points
Process 4 points
Answers all four questions with concrete evidence.
Safety and fairness 4 points
Accounts for authority, privacy and genuine disagreement.
Learning 2 points
Proposes a specific change whose effect can be observed.
