Use precise language and a calibrated nightly audit
Study self-honesty as the information quality on which the book’s other practices depend. Learn to distinguish facts, interpretations and protective narratives, run a precise private review, and convert a bounded record into proportionate correction without self-abuse, forced disclosure or denial of genuine constraints.
Allow about 100 minutes for reading, learning and immediate practice. Multi-day exercises run alongside later lessons.
Learning objectives
Rewrite evasive language without erasing genuine inability or uncertainty.
Apply the three audit questions and the uncomfortable-sentence practice responsibly.
Calibrate ledger marks against predeclared standards and distinguish private truth from disclosure.

Assigned source readings
The book text is the source. The lesson, invented cases and practice tasks are accompanying teaching material. Page numbers below refer to the downloadable full-book PDF, whose pagination can differ from the manuscript’s printed contents.

Develop the argument
The lesson
Replace fog with facts, not automatic accusation
The No-Euphemism Rule asks learners to replace vague scripts with concrete accounts. The source’s two-column method contrasts Story with Truth: what was said automatically versus what actually happened. Its strongest form starts by changing “I could not finish” to “I did not finish,” then specifying the relevant choices and constraints. The second statement establishes noncompletion without prematurely claiming either inability or unwillingness. Where inability is real, retain it. Precision is undermined if a rigid language ban forces the learner to describe coercion, illness or unavailable resources as a free preference.
A good rewrite names the actor, action, period and evidence. It distinguishes a factual description from a proposed motive: “I answered messages during the work block” is observable; “I did so to avoid feeling incompetent” may be a reasonable hypothesis requiring reflection. The author’s aim is restored agency, but agency is more useful when located accurately. Record what could be changed, what could not and what remains unknown. A short causal note can follow the factual entry without turning the entry into an argument for fictional completion.
Three questions and one bounded sentence
The Nightly Truth Audit asks what fell below a chosen standard, where a protective story appeared and what relevant truth is being avoided. The Daily Uncomfortable Sentence states a specific observation about a motive, fear or choice that would otherwise remain vague. These practices are deliberately small and usually private. They can be attached to an existing review, but must not become a reason to withhold sleep, necessary care or recovery. The source’s “no audit, no sleep” phrasing is motivational rhetoric; this course does not prescribe sacrificing sleep to complete a self-examination ritual.
The chapter bans global condemnation and discourages defensive explanations in the initial audit. Preserve the useful separation between description and justification while leaving room for later causal analysis. No genuine problem is understood by deleting its context. The sentence should be accurate rather than maximally painful, and “I did not identify a distortion today” is allowed by the later exercise set. Do not invent a wrongdoing to satisfy a daily quota. A learner may analyse a fictional case instead of exposing private experiences, and repeated distress or rumination is a reason to modify or stop the exercise rather than intensify it.
Calibrate marks and decide what should be shared
Precision Without Masochism treats self-abuse and self-exoneration as parallel failures to describe the event. A ledger standard must be defined before the action: twenty distracted minutes do not fulfil a previously specified thirty-minute focused session. Partial work can still be recorded as partial work. An externally blocked task remains uncompleted, with the blockage noted. Ask what preparation might change next time without assuming that every event was preventable. The record supports a practical redesign, such as moving a repeatedly unsuccessful late-night block, rather than a fixed character judgment.
The objections section distinguishes inward honesty from indiscriminate speech. Truth to another person must be relevant, responsible and free of malice; private reflection does not create an obligation to disclose everything. The workplace objection also recognises that candour can carry real risk. A learner can identify facts privately while considering appropriate support, channels and authority before communicating. The source’s image-protection test is useful but incomplete on its own: privacy, safety and others’ rights also matter. The course grades an accurate assessment and a proportionate next step, not willingness to make a risky confession or accuse someone without sufficient evidence.
Worked example · invented for this course
Original course example: The half-completed review
In this invented case, Mina’s ledger row requires checking all citations in a short article. She checks four of eight and ticks the row because the first four were difficult. She then writes that she is hopeless at research.
Return to the predeclared standard: all eight citations checked. The row is not complete, but four checks are real progress.
Replace both distortions with one account: four of eight citations checked; the other four remain.
Examine the process separately: two sources were unavailable, and Mina spent the last ten minutes rearranging headings.
Record the access blockage and the controllable diversion without using either to erase the other.
Plan an access request and a focused completion block; do not require a public confession or global self-label.
What follows: The corrected record is both stricter and fairer. It preserves the incomplete commitment, useful work, external obstacle and next action.
Train the skill
Practice and evidence
1. Perform the no-euphemism rewrite
Use six fictional statements beginning with common source scripts. Rewrite them with evidence, including one case of genuine inability and one uncertain motive.
Deliverable: Six Story/More precise account pairs plus a 200-word method note.
Name actions and periods before causes.
Keep uncertainty explicit where motive is not established.
Explain why a blanket replacement of cannot with choose not can be inaccurate.
Review criteria
Total available: 10 points
Language 4 points
Produces specific, checkable descriptions.
Calibration 4 points
Preserves real constraints and uncertainty without hiding choices.
Usefulness 2 points
Each rewrite supports a relevant inquiry or correction.
2. Calibrate an audit and ledger
Create one fictional day with a success, partial completion, avoided task and external blockage. Answer the three audit questions and write one bounded uncomfortable sentence.
Deliverable: A four-entry ledger, three audit answers and one proposed revision.
Define the standards before marking.
Use no global labels or invented motives.
Separate private observations from any proposed communication.
Review criteria
Total available: 10 points
Record integrity 4 points
Marks outcomes against the original standards and preserves partial work.
Audit quality 4 points
Answers the questions with specific evidence and proportionate context.
Safeguards 2 points
Protects privacy, recovery and appropriate communication boundaries.

What would an audit look like if it were equally unwilling to exaggerate your failures and your successes?
