Discipline of Greatness · Chapter module

Bring the long view into a fair and workable present

Use the chapter’s retrospective lens to connect daily choices with long-range aims, while treating the imagined future judge as a revisable perspective. Diagnose indefinite postponement, build decade and lifetime frames, and complete all five exercises with evidence, proportion and room for changing circumstances.

4 lessons · about 9 hours plus any multi-day practice

Module objectives

  • Compare the full opening narratives and assess their limits.
  • Distinguish philosophical long-view claims from unverified psychological generalisations.
  • Identify future-rescue assumptions and specify a mechanism for change.
  • Translate long-range aims into weekly practices and annual/quarterly review.
  • Complete all five exercises with a dated ninety-day step and a fair, sustainable integrated plan.
  1. Use the long view as a revisable lens rather than an infallible verdict

    About 110 minutes

    • Compare the complete retrospective narratives without equating outcomes with moral worth.
    • Explain the long-view argument and its links to whole-life pattern, agency and future-self continuity.
    • Distinguish a useful perspective exercise from prediction, diagnosis or an infallible moral judge.
  2. Replace indefinite future rescue with a specific cause for change

    About 110 minutes

    • Explain presentism, death denial and authenticity-as-exemption as the author’s diagnostic claims.
    • Distinguish helpful present attention and self-understanding from indefinite postponement.
    • Convert future-rescue language into a feasible mechanism, first action and review point.
  3. Link the decade plan to weekly evidence and fair periodic review

    About 110 minutes

    • Apply a future-self question to meaningful decisions while preserving present needs and uncertainty.
    • Translate two long-range frames into weekly practices across four domains.
    • Design annual and quarterly reviews with evidence, real constraints and one to three dated corrections.
  4. Complete the five long-view exercises and leave with a workable next step

    About 110 minutes

    • Complete all five exercises with the source’s counts and timing, using a suitable reflective frame.
    • Translate one decade-scale aim into a dated ninety-day step and an annual review plan.
    • Synthesize the chapter’s closing claims without perfectionism, fatalism or contempt for ordinary life.

Apply and defend

Build a long-view plan that can survive contact with life

A fictional library volunteer wants to create a useful collection of local oral histories over ten years. They alternate grand plans with delay, fear future regret and are considering taking on more than their available time allows. Design an evidence-based plan that respects interviewees, existing obligations and changing circumstances.

What to produce

  • A balanced future-perspective analysis and diagnosis of the missing cause for progress.
  • Ten-year and lifetime-or-late-career frames across character, work, relationships and contribution.
  • All five exercise outputs, including one dated ninety-day pilot and one daily question.
  • An annual review appointment plan and quarterly evidence agenda with one to three possible corrections.
  • A 600-word synthesis addressing consent, privacy, capacity, counterarguments and conditions for revision.

Assessment criteria

Use these criteria for self-assessment or discussion with a tutor. The site does not certify this work or assign an automatic mark to written reasoning. Award full points for convincing evidence, about half for partial support, and zero for absent or contradicted evidence; explain intermediate scores and revise after feedback.

Total available: 20 points

Source understanding 5 points
Accurately uses the narratives, diagnostic categories, methods and closing claims.
Planning and evidence 5 points
Connects one long-range aim to realistic weekly work and a dated ninety-day result.
Exercise completeness 5 points
Includes all five exercises, both frames and annual/quarterly review with correct timing.
Fair judgment 5 points
Preserves consent, real constraints, present needs and correctability without shame or ideological grading.
Open the model response after your attempt

A strong response keeps the aim of preserving useful histories but starts with a small pilot and explicit consent and privacy requirements before any recording or sharing. It identifies the missing mechanism behind waiting for a more disciplined future self, then chooses a feasible weekly research or planning block. The imagined future letter is fair rather than punitive and can use a ten-year frame. The ninety-day milestone produces reviewable work, not a promise that the entire archive will succeed. Annual and quarterly reviews weigh evidence, constraints and recipient needs, then select one to three corrections. Rest, relationships and a changed scope can belong in a respected life; neither perfect productivity nor agreement with the author’s mortality rhetoric is required.

Source and interpretation notes
  • The imagined future conscience is treated as a philosophical perspective, not an infallible or unbiased judge. Memory, circumstances and preferences can change.
  • Claims about regret, temporal discounting, mortality reflection and medical outcomes are not independently verified. Notes 297–300 do not establish every broad assertion in the chapter.
  • Mortality-based prompts may be replaced by ten-year or late-career reflection or paused if distressing. The course does not require shame, self-contempt, graphic imagery or clinical exposure.
  • The opening narrative’s unanswered message and later death do not establish causation or individual responsibility for another person’s death. The course explicitly rejects that inference.
  • The source’s strong rhetoric about weakness, wasted time and treatment is not adopted as a diagnosis or human-worth scale. Assessment includes genuine constraints, recovery, pleasure, support and reasonable disagreement.
  • No image blocks occur in the assigned chapter JSON. All substantive H2–H4 headings and the Back Matter transition are covered. Source text is unchanged.
